Welcome to Colby Community College sports

The Colby Community College athletic department welcomes you to the 2010 sports season. The Trojan family takes great pride in the accomplishments of its student-athletes, both on the playing field and in the classroom.
In the fall the women's cross country, men's cross country, volleyball, women's half marathon and men's half marathon teams were all honored for their accomplishments in the classroom. Each squad achieved at least a 3.0 grade point average and the men's half marathon team had the highest team GPA in the nation. While CCC continues to excel in the classroom, its student-athletes also excel on the playing field and at the next level. The Trojan baseball team finished 39-22 in 2009 and third in Region VI. The wrestling squad finished in the top 6 as a team at the national tournament for the second straight season.
The CCC athletic department is dedicated into making its student-athletes into well-rounded individuals by employing qualified coaches and athletic personnel. Great things continue to be in store for CCC athletics.

Carey Jones named head volleyball coach

Colby Community College has announced the selection of Carey Jones to head the Lady Trojan women’s volleyball team. Jones has 11 years experience as a player and as a high school and college volleyball coach. She replaces Valerie Armstrong who resigned to accept a coaching job in Texas.

Jones was the head volleyball coach at Andale High School from April 2008-January 2009. She led the 4A team to many successes including the first winning record in 13 years of 28-8. Six Andale players were nominated to the All-Conference first and second teams. Two players continued their volleyball careers at Wichita State University and Cloud County Community College.

Jones was assistant volleyball coach at Garden City Community College from July 2006-June 2007. She actively recruited Kansas and out-of-state players. In addition to coaching duties, she was responsible for practice plans for pre- and post-season and directed weight training and summer workouts. She co-directed summer camp with over 200 participants and was the co-director of the Block Out Volleyball club volleyball program.

“My experience in Garden City taught me about the recruiting obstacles in the Jayhawk Conference and the competitive environment it brings,” said Jones. “I am prepared to take that challenge and look forward to coaching at CCC.”

Jones’ first priority is to meet with next year’s sophomore players and begin recruiting additional athletes for the 2009 season.

“It is my understanding that we have 4-5 incoming freshmen players signed,” said Jones. I’ll be looking for athletes who are willing to work hard, learn a new system and adapt to a new environment.”

Coach Jones is married to Colby native Chad Jones. He is a graduate of CCC and is currently the group manager for the Mid America Ag Network.

Coach Comments: We struggled at the plate today. We didn’t make the in game adjustments we needed to gets hits. We made a few mistakes each game and they took advantage of it. Marissa threw very well in game one but we couldn’t give her any run support. We will look to bounce back on track this Tuesday when we travel to Lamar, Colorado for a doubleheader. We also play in North Platte on Wednesday to make up the game lost on February 15. We are currently 6-7 and 0-2 in the conference. Our next home action is Sunday March 29 with Western Nebraska. Coach Comments: We hit the ball and scored runs. When we did hit the ball it was right at people. We came out flat. We need to do a better job with our team intensity. We can’t come out flat and expect to win against good teams. We have a little break before we start conference play next Sunday in El Dorado. I hope this break will help refuel us going into conference play. We are currently 6-5 on the season

Coach Comments: We played better on Saturday than we have in the other outings. Marissa threw very well against Western. We weren’t able to key hits to drive in runs during that game. Our defense played the best we have all year. The team didn’t let the cool weather affect them. We showed signs of learning from the mistakes we made earlier in the week. We have our first conference games this week. We play at Garden City on Wednesday and Barton comes to town on Thursday. We are currently 3-3 on the year.
