Aug. 28, 2008

The Colby Community College volleyball team lost a tough five-set match Wednesday at Garden City Community College. The game scores were 23-25, 25-19, 25-14, 18-25, 6-15.

“It was a disappointing loss,” Head Coach Valerie Armstrong said. “The match was tough, but we just checked out mentally when we needed to be more focused.”

“Rex stepped up and hit well and Jessi Schmidt came off the bench and played a big role for us,” Armstrong said. “We just have to work on fixing the little things that hurt us.”

The Lady Trojans travel to Hutchinson on Wednesday, Sept. 3 for their next match and host the Colby Classic Tournament on Sept. 5-6.

Lady Trojans defeat McCook in straight sets

After a disappointing 1-5 start to the season, head volleyball coach Valerie Armstrong’s team responded with a straight set win over McCook at the Community Building on Monday night. The Lady Trojans won by the scores of 25-18, 25-17, 25-19

CCC exacted a little revenge after losing to the Lady Indians of McCook on Friday at the North Platte Tournament. Armstrong was disappointed in her team’s showing over the weekend, but was happy with her team’s improvement on Monday night.

“We passed the ball significantly better tonight than last weekend,” Armstrong said. “Our outsides (outside hitters) attacked the ball better and we finally played defense to our capability.”

Game one started as a see-saw battle, but McCook capatilized on Trojan errors to take a 4-7 lead. The Lady Trojans responded with a 6-0 flurry and pushed the lead to 16-8 with a 12-1 overall run. Sophomore Rexanne Schilowsky keyed the run with several kills and solid play at the net. McCook never got closer than six points and the Trojans won 25-18.

The Trojans used a 6-0 run to begian game two, with freshman setter Priscila Sena serving. Early in the game, the Trojans passing was excellent, led by sophomore libero Megan Dennis. The Lady Trojans never relenquished control and went on for the six-point victory.

After falling behind 4-9 in game three and an Armstrong timeout, the Trojans began to chip away at the McCook lead and eventually tied the game at 11. CCC then stretched out the lead to six at 19-13 and went on for the victory

Armstrong said her team still has many things to work on, but feels they can be competitive with anybody.

“We continue to give away points on service errors and are still struggling converting free balls,” Armstrong said. “We need to capatilize on these to continue to improve.”

Former Trojan Daniel Cormier withdraws from Olympics due to illness

United States freestyle wrestler Daniel Cormier became dehydrated after making weight for Thursday's matches at 96 kilograms and withdrew before wrestling.

According to national governing body USA Wrestling, Cormier weighed in Wednesday afternoon at the China Agriculture University gymnasium but became ill shortly thereafter and was treated by the USOC medical staff at the athletes' village. He was then taken to a local hospital, but is no longer having hydration problems.

After consulting with medical officials, the U.S. coaches decided to sit Cormier for Thursday's matches.

American Daniel Cormier dealt with dehydration issues less than a day before his scheduled match in the 96-kilogram class and had to withdraw. Because Cormier had already weighed in, the United States could not enter a replacement wrestler at his weight.

Cormier, the only returning U.S. freestyle wrestler from the Athens Olympics, was considered to have a good chance of medaling. He was third in the world last year and was fourth in the 2004 Olympics, and won both the U.S. nationals and the Olympic trials in Las Vegas.

Cormier, from Stillwater, Okla., also had a favorable bracket, with gold medal favorite Shirvani Muradov of Russia in the opposite bracket. Cormier also did not have to wrestle a qualification bout and would have needed to win only three matches to reach the finals.

A number of U.S. wrestlers have had trouble making weight in Beijing, including last-minute 60-kg (132-pound) fill-in Mike Zadick and 55kg
(121-pound) gold medalist Henry Cejudo, who said he dropped 10 pounds in less than two hours' time before his weigh-in Monday.

Cormier, 29, was second in the 2001 NCAA championships at Oklahoma State. He has wrestled extensively on the international circuit since 2002.

Jasper named new women's basketball coach

Colby Community College has announced the selection of Brady Jasper to head the Lady Trojan women’s basketball team. Jasper, who has coaching experience in the Jayhawk Conference, will replace DeJeanette Flournoy. Flournoy resigned last week from the position which she began in July to play professional women’s basketball.

Jasper served two years as the assistant women’s basketball coach at Garden City Community College. After being contacted by athletic director Ryan Sturdy, Jasper accepted the head coaching job at CCC.

“I am excited and happy to have Coach Jasper here at CCC,” said Sturdy. “He’ll do a great job and he has extensive experience in the Jayhawk. He is the right guy for the job. I look forward to the continuing success of the women’s program under his leadership.”

“When I began at Garden City two years ago, we were in much the same situation as CCC is this year,” said Jasper. “We had 5-7 players and had to scramble to fill the team. It will be a challenge this year but we still have until September 2 to sign players who can be competitive in the Jayhawk. I think there are still potential players who have not committed to other schools.”

Jasper graduated from Troy High School, Troy, KS. He attended Highland Community College where he played basketball for one year. He continued his education at Benedictine College in Atchison where he continued his basketball career, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in education.

In addition to his college coaching experience, Jasper coached high school women for two years in Elwood, KS and was the head women’s coach at LaFayette High School in St. Joseph, MO for four seasons.

“I loved coaching at LaFayette,” said Jasper. It was a great place. However, I really wanted to be a college coach so I made the jump and coached at Highland Community College for one year.”

Jasper was beginning his third year as assistant women’s coach in Garden City.

“We would like to thank Garden City Community College for working with us to make it possible to hire Coach Jasper, allowing him to further his coaching career,” said CCC President Lynn Kreider.

Jasper will begin his duties immediately.

“The first task is to make sure we have players who are competitive and will play to the best of their ability,” said Coach Jasper. “We will move forward with a positive attitude and I look forward to the challenge.”

Fomer Trojan begins Olympic quest for Gold

Cormier will face Michel Batista of Cuba. If he wins, he will face the winner of Luis Vivenes of Venezuela and Taimuraz Tigiev of Kazakhstan.

On Cormier’s side of the bracket is 2007 World silver medalist Saeid Abrahimi of Iran, who defeated Cormier at the World Championships last year. Also on his side of the bracket is former World champion Georgi Gogshelidze of Georgia

“As the bronze medalist from last year, he is confident he can win the gold medal,” said Jackson. “His training has gone better than it ever has. He has made the weight, probably the last time he will ever be at 96 kg. We are ready for him to wrestle.”

Cormier, the team captain, is competing in his second Olympic Games. He was fourth in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece. Cormier was a 2007 World bronze medalist. He has made every U.S. World and Olympic team since 2003. He is from Lafayette, La. He was a NJCAA national champion at Colby CC in Kansas, and a NCAA runner-up for Oklahoma State.

Lady Trojan Volleyball begins season Friday, Aug. 22

The Colby Community College volleyball team, under the direction of new head coach Valerie Armstrong, begins its season this Friday. The Lady Trojans will be competing in the North Platte Tournament in North Platte, Neb.

The Trojans play four games on Friday, beginning with No. 15-ranked Northeastern Junior College at 2 p.m. The remaining Friday schedule consists of McCook at 3:30 p.m., Eastern Wyoming at 5:30 p.m., and Iowa Central at 8:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Lady Trojans will face South East Community College of Nebraska at 9:30 a.m. and North Platte CC at 2:30 p.m.

The first home match for the Lady Trojans is Monday, Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. at the Community Building. The annual Colby Classic Tournament is Sept 5-6.

The Lady Trojans return just two players from last season in sophomore middle blocker Rexanne Schilowsky (Phillipsburg) and sophomore libero / outside hitter Megan Dennis (Oakley). Armstrong expects that both will have a positive impact on this year’s team.

“Megan can pass the ball and is quick defensively. She is also intense and will be a vocal leader for us,” Armstrong said. “Rex was a captain last season and will be a force in the middle.”

The Lady Trojans have one other sophomore on their roster in transfer Priscila Sena. A 5’5” setter, Sena, transferred to the program from College of the Southwest where Armstrong was previously an assistant. Sena is originally from Sao Paulo, Brazil. Armstrong said she was happy that “Pri” decided to transfer to Colby.

“She has great hands and is a smart player, but needs to improve on her quickness and aggressiveness.”

The Colby squad features eight freshman: LeAnna Shaeffer (Oberlin, Kan.); Ashley Ming (Dighton, Kan.); Jessica Schmidt (Melvern, Kan.); Michele Ferreria (Sao Paulo, Brazil); Juliana Motta Da Silva (Campo Mourao, Brazil); Jessica Merino (Belen, New Mexico); Cassie Smatana (Albuquerque, New Mexico); and Lisa Faimon (Stratton, Neb.).

With the abundance of newcomers, Armstrong and assistant coach Juliana “Ju” Todescan are in the process of finding the right rotations for the team to be successful.
