Solid defense, Ottoway shooting lead the Trojans to victory
The Colby Community College men’s basketball team (4-10, 1-0) had been looking for a spark after a slow start to the season, and found one Wednesday night in freshman guard Jordon Ottoway (Holcomb). With the Trojans trailing by two points midway through the second half, Ottoway keyed a 14-0 run with back-to-back three-pointers. The Trojans continued the hot streak and opened up an 85-64 lead with two minutes remaining before eventually winning 85-70.
Ottoway finished with 25 points, 17 in the second half. Ottoway finished 7-of-10 from three-point range and overall was 9-of-13 from the field. Ottoway made all seven shots he attempted in the second half, including five three-point field goals. The Trojans also received a solid effort from Erick Pegeuro, who came off the bench for 12 points and 13 points. Leading scorer Mike Boyd finished with 17 points and point-guard Andrew Engel had another solid all-around game with 14 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists.
CCC trailed 17-12 in the first half, but went on a 12-0 run to take a 24-17 lead with nine minutes remaining in the first half. Garden City cut into the lead when Trojan big men, 6’8” Koance Davis and 6’11” Everson Lacerda, both had to go to the bench with foul trouble. But Ottoway, Peguero and Brantrel Graham came off the bench to keep Colby in the lead. Garden City regained the lead at 36-35 with two minutes remaining in the first half, and stretched the lead to five with 30 seconds remaining. Boyd hit a three with 15 seconds left to pull the Trojans within two at halftime.
The Trojans travel to Pratt on Jan. 5 and to Dodge City on Jan. 9 before returning home to face Butler on Jan. 13.
