The Colby Community College men's basketball team (5-10, 2-0) won in thrilling fashion Saturday night, defeating Pratt 71-70 in overtime in Pratt, Kan. Freshman forward Erick Pegeuro banked home a three-pointer at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime and the Trojans got a late defensive stand in overtime to seal the one point victory.
"I told our guys after the game, sometimes you win gritty," Head Coach John Woods said in his post-game interview with broadcaster Rich Epp. "The game didn't play out the way we expected. But all that matters is that we are 2-0 in the conference.
Coach Woods was frustrated with his team most of the night, because the team consistently setteled for outside shots. The Trojans shot 42% from the field, committed 27 turnovers and shot just 8-of-19 from the free-throw line.
"We need to work on getting the ball to the right people at the right time," Woods said. "Obviously, you don't win many games committing 27 turnovers or shooting poorly. That is something we will focus on when we play Dodge City next Wednesday."
The Trojans trailed by seven points with a minute and a half left in regulation, but a furious rally evened the score. Jordan Ottoway, who struggled shooting most of the night, hit a three-pointer at the beginning of overtime. Pratt responded with a three-pointer of their own, and the rest of overtime followed the same script. Everytime Colby would score, Pratt followed.
With 28 seconds remaining, Koance Davis, who scored 5 points in overtime, hit a free-throw to give the Trojans a 71-70 lead. The Trojans held Pratt without scoring, but Ottoway missed the front end of a one-and-one, to give the ball back to Pratt with six seconds remaining. However the Trojans defense once again responded to seal the victory.
