Carey Jones named head volleyball coach
Colby Community College has announced the selection of Carey Jones to head the Lady Trojan women’s volleyball team. Jones has 11 years experience as a player and as a high school and college volleyball coach. She replaces Valerie Armstrong who resigned to accept a coaching job in Texas.
Jones was the head volleyball coach at Andale High School from April 2008-January 2009. She led the 4A team to many successes including the first winning record in 13 years of 28-8. Six Andale players were nominated to the All-Conference first and second teams. Two players continued their volleyball careers at Wichita State University and Cloud County Community College.
Jones was assistant volleyball coach at Garden City Community College from July 2006-June 2007. She actively recruited Kansas and out-of-state players. In addition to coaching duties, she was responsible for practice plans for pre- and post-season and directed weight training and summer workouts. She co-directed summer camp with over 200 participants and was the co-director of the Block Out Volleyball club volleyball program.
“My experience in Garden City taught me about the recruiting obstacles in the Jayhawk Conference and the competitive environment it brings,” said Jones. “I am prepared to take that challenge and look forward to coaching at CCC.”
Jones’ first priority is to meet with next year’s sophomore players and begin recruiting additional athletes for the 2009 season.
“It is my understanding that we have 4-5 incoming freshmen players signed,” said Jones. I’ll be looking for athletes who are willing to work hard, learn a new system and adapt to a new environment.”
Coach Jones is married to Colby native Chad Jones. He is a graduate of CCC and is currently the group manager for the Mid America Ag Network.

Coach Comments: We played better on Saturday than we have in the other outings. Marissa threw very well against Western. We weren’t able to key hits to drive in runs during that game. Our defense played the best we have all year. The team didn’t let the cool weather affect them. We showed signs of learning from the mistakes we made earlier in the week. We have our first conference games this week. We play at Garden City on Wednesday and Barton comes to town on Thursday. We are currently 3-3 on the year.

Coach Comments: We didn’t play with much fire today. We struggled at the plate most of the day. We have struggled in the early part of our first four games hitting the ball. I thought our pitchers threw well for early in the year. We have to give run support for them to be successful. We fought back in game two after being down 6-0 we had the tying runs on base, but couldn’t get them across the plate. We have to make the average plays on defense and hit the ball with runners in scoring position. We have a big test this weekend in the Cloud County tournament. We play three games Saturday and two on Sunday. Three of the five teams we play made it to the National tournament last year. It is a good early season test for our team. We are currently 2-2.

Coach Comments: Overall it wasn’t a bad start for us. The team never gave up when we were down. We found a way to win both games. We had some people step up when we needed it and drive in runs. We have practiced since the start of school and haven’t had a game yet. I think we were a little nervous with this being our first outing of the year. Our defense played well. Our pitchers stepped up when we needed it. We need to cut down on the number of walks. The biggest thing we need to improve on is our intensity. We went flat in both games during the middle. This is the first time in a long time we have started out 2-0. I hope this can give us a boost going into the games against Lamar tomorrow. Start time is 1pm at Carl Adams Softball field on the CCC campus.

Trojan baseball drops opener to Lamar
Trojan baseball drops opener to Lamar
Feb. 11, 2009
It was a somewhat rocky start to the baseball season, as the Trojans committed four costly errors in a 7-6 loss in Lamar, Colo. All seven of Lamar’s runs were unearned.
“We beat them in almost every aspect except the score,” Head Coach Ryan Carter said. “Our coaching staff also thought that some calls went against us, but despite those things there will still many positive things that happened.”
After falling behind 4-0 in the first three innings, the Trojans scored two runs in the top of the fourth. They trailed 5-2 entering the top of the sixth, but sophomore transfer Jason Huerta smacked a three-run home run to tie the score. However, Lamar was the beneficiary of two more unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth and they held on for the one-run victory.
Mark Phillips started and received the loss in the game. In four innings, Phillips allowed three hits and three walks while striking out four. Josh Edwards pitched the final four innings in relief, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out two.
Huerta was 1-for-3 with the homerun and Jerry Hildreth was 3-for-5 with an RBI and a stolen base.
The Trojans begin their annual week-long trip into Texas this weekend with a double-header with Ranger Community College in Odessa, Texas. Other stops on the trip are a doubleheader with Odessa on Monday, a doubleheader on Feb. 18 with West Texas College, a doubleheader with Wayland Baptist JV on Feb. 20, and finally a doubleheader with Clarendon Community College on Feb. 21.
The Trojans host Lamar on Feb. 25 for the first home game of the season. Their will be just one game, beginning at noon.

Acuay's triple-double leads Trojans over Hutch
A stellar performance on the defensive end of the floor and a triple-double by Shamar Acuay vaulted the Trojan men’s basketball team to 73-50 victory over Hutchinson Sunday at the Community Building.
Acuay had season highs with 38 points, 18 rebounds and 10 steals. As impressive as his individual effort was, the Trojans defensive effort held one of the top teams in the Jayhawk Conference to 50 points. CCC played a match-up zone for a majority of the contest, but it was very effective against the Blue Dragons.
Colby limited Hutch to 28 percent shooting from the field, and just 4-of-24 from three-point range. Head Coach John Woods inserted 6’4” Colby native Anthony Rohr into the starting lineup and the move paid dividends. While Rohr’s stat line is always less than stellar (2 points, 5 rebounds), his and the team’s defensive effort was the catalyst in the victory. Erick Peguero added 10 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals for the Trojans.
The Trojans jumped on Hutch early, starting the game with a 12-2 run over the game’s first five minutes. Hutch slowly chipped away at the lead, and closed to within at 19-17. But Peguero hit back-to-back threes for the Trojans. The Trojans continued to stretch the lead as Acuay scored 13 points over the final four minutes of the first half. The Trojans led 44-29 at halftime.
The second half was all Trojans. After the teams traded baskets over the first three and a half minutes of the second half, the Trojans continued to stretch the lead. Hutch was unable to get the ball inside and settled for jump shots and three-point attempts.
With the victory, the Trojans record moves to 4-17 overall, 2-5 in the conference. The Trojans travel to Great Bend to face first place Barton County on Wednesday.

Trojan men unable to overcome early deficit in loss to Garden City
A lackluster beginning and end doomed the Trojan men in Sunday’s contest with Jayhawk West foe Garden City. The Trojans lost 67-55, dropping them to 3-16 overall, 1-4 in the conference. Aireus Stephenson led the Trojans with 18 points on 7-of-18 shooting from the field. Shamar Acuay had 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Charleston Smith had 11 points and 5 rebounds.
CCC was hampered early by offensive inefficiency – mainly poor ball movement and turnovers. Garden City jumped out to a 21-5 lead over the first 10 minutes of the opening half and led by 18 points with just under six minutes left in the first half. The Trojans closed to within 12 points at halftime as Aireus Stephenson scored seven points in the last two minutes.

Trojans defeat Pratt 80-78 in overtime for first conference win
It has been somewhat of a tough season for the Colby Community College men’s basketball team, and it appeared it was going to get tougher. Twice the Trojans appeared to have Pratt beaten, but twice Pratt was able to tie the score.
In overtime, The Trojans took a 73-72 lead on an Anthony Rohr lay-up with a minute remaining, and extended the lead to five on Aireus Stephenson free-throws.
