A stellar performance on the defensive end of the floor and a triple-double by Shamar Acuay vaulted the Trojan men’s basketball team to 73-50 victory over Hutchinson Sunday at the Community Building.
Acuay had season highs with 38 points, 18 rebounds and 10 steals. As impressive as his individual effort was, the Trojans defensive effort held one of the top teams in the Jayhawk Conference to 50 points. CCC played a match-up zone for a majority of the contest, but it was very effective against the Blue Dragons.
Colby limited Hutch to 28 percent shooting from the field, and just 4-of-24 from three-point range. Head Coach John Woods inserted 6’4” Colby native Anthony Rohr into the starting lineup and the move paid dividends. While Rohr’s stat line is always less than stellar (2 points, 5 rebounds), his and the team’s defensive effort was the catalyst in the victory. Erick Peguero added 10 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals for the Trojans.
The Trojans jumped on Hutch early, starting the game with a 12-2 run over the game’s first five minutes. Hutch slowly chipped away at the lead, and closed to within at 19-17. But Peguero hit back-to-back threes for the Trojans. The Trojans continued to stretch the lead as Acuay scored 13 points over the final four minutes of the first half. The Trojans led 44-29 at halftime.
The second half was all Trojans. After the teams traded baskets over the first three and a half minutes of the second half, the Trojans continued to stretch the lead. Hutch was unable to get the ball inside and settled for jump shots and three-point attempts.
With the victory, the Trojans record moves to 4-17 overall, 2-5 in the conference. The Trojans travel to Great Bend to face first place Barton County on Wednesday.
