The Colby Community College baseball team (16-12, 9-5) split Saturday with Butler County at the CCC baseball diamond. The Trojans lost the first game 6-5, but responded to win game two 3-1.
Runs were hard to come by in game one, as the conditions were not ideal. The wind was blowing in, making it impossible for the ball to carry. The Trojans scored a run in the bottom of the second and again in the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead. Butler tied the game in the fifth on a controversial play at the plate. Trojan catcher Eric Sim appeared to tag out a Butler baserunner, but the home plate umpire called him safe.
Butler used the momentum to add four runs in the sixth inning. The Trojans rallied in the seventh inning, despite two outs and no runners on. Consecutive hits by Brennan Peterson, Jaret Chatwood, Scott Hornstra and Aaron Dunsmore brought the Trojans to within one run. Dunsmore was on second and Steve Kletke drove the ball into the left-center gap, but it was caught.
Sean Lydon picked up the loss for the Trojans, despite allowing just one earned run in 5 innings. Five unearned runs were allowed on two Trojan errors.
The Trojans responded with a 3-1 victory in game two. Hornstra was 3-for-3 with an RBI and Trojan starting pitcher Mark Phillips allowed just one run in 6 innings of work. Phillips allowed four hits and four walks, but struck out seven. Damien Hess pitched the seventh inning for the save.
