Men’s Basketball loses opener to #15-ranked Northeastern
Nov. 3, 2008
The Colby Community College men’s basketball team kicked off their season Sunday, Nov. 2 with a 91-77 loss against No. 15 ranked Northeastern Junior College of Sterling, Colo. The Trojans started four freshman and only two players over six feet, five inches, but outrebounded and defended well in the first half. CCC held Northeastern to 32 percent shooting in the first half. The game was tied at 34 after the first half.
“The first half is were we want to be defensively.” Head Coach John Woods said. “We work everyday in practice on rebounding and blocking out. We emphasized positioning around the basket, blocking out and defending around the basket. With a small lineup, we had to.”
However, in the second half Northeastern picked up their intensity and the young Trojan squad was unable to respond. The Trojans were hampered by foul trouble to sophomores Erick Peguero and Daray Hill. Both had fouled out with 12 minutes remaining in the second half.
“Our youth showed in the second half,” Woods said. “It’s hard to finish a game with all freshman. We asked Erick and Ray to guard their best player in Alex Garcia. They did a good job, but he’s tough to guard and as a result they were in foul trouble most of the game.”
Throughout the entire game the Trojans were able to drive to the basket and get to the free-throw line. Overall, the Trojans had 46 free-throw attempts and converted on 31 of them. The Trojans, offensively, relied on setting up 6’0” Shamar Acuay, who scored 27 points and had a team leading 6 rebounds. Acuay drove to the hoop often, and was 15-of-18 from the free-throw line.
“Shamar is a viable offensive threat. We intend to go to Shamar a lot,” Woods said. “He can score the ball, and even if they double him, he can kick it out to our outside shooters.”
Freshman point guard Derrick Thomas finished with 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field. Thomas scored 12 of his points in the second half. Charleston Smith added 13 points and 5 rebounds and Aireus Stephenson had 11 points.

CCC lost to Sheridan CC, Western Nebraska, Northwest Wyoming, Casper and Eastern Wyoming.
Head Coach Valerie Armstrong said she was pleased with the win over North Platte, who is currently ranked No. 20 in Division II. However, Armstrong said the team lost several close matches to quality teams, including losing 26-24 in game two to Casper after leading by six late in the game.

Fall Softball Results (Sept. 14)
The Hays tournament was canceled on Saturday due to weather. We traveled to Garden City and scrimmaged them for 14 innings and didn’t keep stats. We played on Sunday in Hays against Fort Hays and Seward.
Colby 1
FHSU 5
Losing Pitcher – Marissa Elsberry 6H 5R 2ER 3BB 7K 6IP
Leading Hitter – Tiffany Allen 1-2 2B 1RBI
Team Hits – 5
Colby 9
Seward 12
Losing Pitcher – Jaylen Reed 12H 10R 6ER 1BB 2K 4IP
Logan Wark 3H 2R 2ER 0BB 0K 1IP
Leading Hitter – Ashley Primm 3-3 4RBI 3B
Team Hits – 17
Coach Comments: I though we played better today than at Garden City. We are still making to many little mistakes on defense. You have to make the average play on defense and you will keep yourself in the game. We started slow at the plate against Hays but finished strong. Against Seward we jumped on them 6-1 after the top of the second. They rallied to score 8 in the inning but we found back. We had the winning runs on base but couldn’t get a key hit to score the runs. I thought our talk and intensity was the best it had been all fall in the Seward game. We need to focus on building from each game and not take steps backwards. We play in North Platte this coming weekend. Pool Play is on Saturday and bracket play on Sunday. Western Nebraksa, York College and Doane are in our pool for this tournament. Don’t forget to come out to the Colby Community College campus on Wednesday at noon for the backer luncheon. Cost is $6 for lunch and all the coaches from the college will give a rundown of the past week and what is going on for the coming week.

Volleyball 1-3 at NJC Tournament
Sept. 16, 2008
The Colby Community College volleyball team (8-12 overall) went 1-3 over the weekend at the Northeastern Junior College Tournament in Sterling, Colo. According to Head Coach Valerie Armstrong, the team spent a portion of the weekend trying to overcome injuries to two key components.
“In the first game with Lamar, Priscila rolled her ankle,” Armstrong said. Armstrong was referring to sophomore transfer setter Priscila Sena, the only setter listed on the squad. The Lady Trojans were forced to move freshman outside hitter Juliana Motta Da Silva to setter for the remaining games. Armstrong said Silva also suffered a slight knee injury, but was still able to handle the setting duties for the time being.
Armstrong said Sena’s availability was questionable for tonight’s game with Seward, and realistically she hoped Sena would be available for the Wyo-Braska Tournament on Sept. 18-20.
At the NJC Tournament, the Lady Trojans began with a 25-19, 25-19, 25-21 victory over McCook. Their second match was against the #2-ranked team in the NJCAA in Western Nebraska. WNCC handed the Lady Trojans a 25-20, 25-14, 25-10 defeat. CCC lost their remaining two matches to Lamar (25-22, 16-25, 19-25, 25-16, 8-15) and Air Force Prep (25-12, 21-25, 23-25, 23-25).

CCC drops match at Hutchinson
CCC drops conference match at Hutchinson
Wednesday, Sept. 3
The Colby Community College Lady Trojan volleyball team (2-7, 0-2) lost Wednesday at Hutchinson Community College. The match scores were 15-25, 15-25, 12-25. Head Coach Valerie Armstrong said the scores were deceiving, and that her team showed improvement.
“The score doesn’t reflect how we played defensively,” Armstrong said. “I was very pleased with our defensive play tonight. We just didn’t hit the ball well, and we might have to change some things (to improve on that).”
Armstrong also said the teams blocking was effective against Hutchinson.
“We only had a couple of blocks, but we got a lot of touches,” Armstrong said. “I thought we disrupted them some, but just couldn’t finish on the offensive end.”
Sophomore libero Megan Dennis (Oakley) led the defensive effort with 18 digs and Rexanne Schilowsky had 7 kills, including five in the first match. The Lady Trojans host the Colby Classic Tournament this weekend, which features 10 teams from Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado and Wyoming.
The Lady Trojans play at 8 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. on Friday morning and play at 12:30 p.m., 1:45 p.m., 4:15 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
“Our players are excited about this weekend,” Armstrong said. “We saw some of our capabilities (against Hutch) and hopefully we’ll continue to take steps in the right direction.”

Lady Trojans defeat McCook in straight sets
After a disappointing 1-5 start to the season, head volleyball coach Valerie Armstrong’s team responded with a straight set win over McCook at the Community Building on Monday night. The Lady Trojans won by the scores of 25-18, 25-17, 25-19
CCC exacted a little revenge after losing to the Lady Indians of McCook on Friday at the North Platte Tournament. Armstrong was disappointed in her team’s showing over the weekend, but was happy with her team’s improvement on Monday night.
“We passed the ball significantly better tonight than last weekend,” Armstrong said. “Our outsides (outside hitters) attacked the ball better and we finally played defense to our capability.”
Game one started as a see-saw battle, but McCook capatilized on Trojan errors to take a 4-7 lead. The Lady Trojans responded with a 6-0 flurry and pushed the lead to 16-8 with a 12-1 overall run. Sophomore Rexanne Schilowsky keyed the run with several kills and solid play at the net. McCook never got closer than six points and the Trojans won 25-18.
The Trojans used a 6-0 run to begian game two, with freshman setter Priscila Sena serving. Early in the game, the Trojans passing was excellent, led by sophomore libero Megan Dennis. The Lady Trojans never relenquished control and went on for the six-point victory.
After falling behind 4-9 in game three and an Armstrong timeout, the Trojans began to chip away at the McCook lead and eventually tied the game at 11. CCC then stretched out the lead to six at 19-13 and went on for the victory
Armstrong said her team still has many things to work on, but feels they can be competitive with anybody.
“We continue to give away points on service errors and are still struggling converting free balls,” Armstrong said. “We need to capatilize on these to continue to improve.”

Former Trojan Daniel Cormier withdraws from Olympics due to illness
United States freestyle wrestler Daniel Cormier became dehydrated after making weight for Thursday's matches at 96 kilograms and withdrew before wrestling.
According to national governing body USA Wrestling, Cormier weighed in Wednesday afternoon at the China Agriculture University gymnasium but became ill shortly thereafter and was treated by the USOC medical staff at the athletes' village. He was then taken to a local hospital, but is no longer having hydration problems.
After consulting with medical officials, the U.S. coaches decided to sit Cormier for Thursday's matches.
American Daniel Cormier dealt with dehydration issues less than a day before his scheduled match in the 96-kilogram class and had to withdraw. Because Cormier had already weighed in, the United States could not enter a replacement wrestler at his weight.
Cormier, the only returning U.S. freestyle wrestler from the Athens Olympics, was considered to have a good chance of medaling. He was third in the world last year and was fourth in the 2004 Olympics, and won both the U.S. nationals and the Olympic trials in Las Vegas.
Cormier, from Stillwater, Okla., also had a favorable bracket, with gold medal favorite Shirvani Muradov of Russia in the opposite bracket. Cormier also did not have to wrestle a qualification bout and would have needed to win only three matches to reach the finals.
A number of U.S. wrestlers have had trouble making weight in Beijing, including last-minute 60-kg (132-pound) fill-in Mike Zadick and 55kg
(121-pound) gold medalist Henry Cejudo, who said he dropped 10 pounds in less than two hours' time before his weigh-in Monday.
Cormier, 29, was second in the 2001 NCAA championships at Oklahoma State. He has wrestled extensively on the international circuit since 2002.

Jasper named new women's basketball coach
Colby Community College has announced the selection of Brady Jasper to head the Lady Trojan women’s basketball team. Jasper, who has coaching experience in the Jayhawk Conference, will replace DeJeanette Flournoy. Flournoy resigned last week from the position which she began in July to play professional women’s basketball.
Jasper served two years as the assistant women’s basketball coach at Garden City Community College. After being contacted by athletic director Ryan Sturdy, Jasper accepted the head coaching job at CCC.
“I am excited and happy to have Coach Jasper here at CCC,” said Sturdy. “He’ll do a great job and he has extensive experience in the Jayhawk. He is the right guy for the job. I look forward to the continuing success of the women’s program under his leadership.”
“When I began at Garden City two years ago, we were in much the same situation as CCC is this year,” said Jasper. “We had 5-7 players and had to scramble to fill the team. It will be a challenge this year but we still have until September 2 to sign players who can be competitive in the Jayhawk. I think there are still potential players who have not committed to other schools.”
Jasper graduated from Troy High School, Troy, KS. He attended Highland Community College where he played basketball for one year. He continued his education at Benedictine College in Atchison where he continued his basketball career, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in education.
In addition to his college coaching experience, Jasper coached high school women for two years in Elwood, KS and was the head women’s coach at LaFayette High School in St. Joseph, MO for four seasons.
“I loved coaching at LaFayette,” said Jasper. It was a great place. However, I really wanted to be a college coach so I made the jump and coached at Highland Community College for one year.”
Jasper was beginning his third year as assistant women’s coach in Garden City.
“We would like to thank Garden City Community College for working with us to make it possible to hire Coach Jasper, allowing him to further his coaching career,” said CCC President Lynn Kreider.
Jasper will begin his duties immediately.
“The first task is to make sure we have players who are competitive and will play to the best of their ability,” said Coach Jasper. “We will move forward with a positive attitude and I look forward to the challenge.”

Fomer Trojan begins Olympic quest for Gold
Cormier will face Michel Batista of Cuba. If he wins, he will face the winner of Luis Vivenes of Venezuela and Taimuraz Tigiev of Kazakhstan.
On Cormier’s side of the bracket is 2007 World silver medalist Saeid Abrahimi of Iran, who defeated Cormier at the World Championships last year. Also on his side of the bracket is former World champion Georgi Gogshelidze of Georgia
“As the bronze medalist from last year, he is confident he can win the gold medal,” said Jackson. “His training has gone better than it ever has. He has made the weight, probably the last time he will ever be at 96 kg. We are ready for him to wrestle.”
Cormier, the team captain, is competing in his second Olympic Games. He was fourth in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece. Cormier was a 2007 World bronze medalist. Lady Trojan Volleyball begins season Friday, Aug. 22
The Colby Community College volleyball team, under the direction of new head coach Valerie Armstrong, begins its season this Friday. The Lady Trojans will be competing in the North Platte Tournament in North Platte, Neb.
The Trojans play four games on Friday, beginning with No. 15-ranked Northeastern Junior College at 2 p.m. The remaining Friday schedule consists of McCook at 3:30 p.m., Eastern Wyoming at 5:30 p.m., and Iowa Central at 8:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Lady Trojans will face South East Community College of Nebraska at 9:30 a.m. and North Platte CC at 2:30 p.m.
The first home match for the Lady Trojans is Monday, Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. at the Community Building. The annual Colby Classic Tournament is Sept 5-6.
The Lady Trojans return just two players from last season in sophomore middle blocker Rexanne Schilowsky (Phillipsburg) and sophomore libero / outside hitter Megan Dennis (Oakley). Armstrong expects that both will have a positive impact on this year’s team.
“Megan can pass the ball and is quick defensively. She is also intense and will be a vocal leader for us,” Armstrong said. “Rex was a captain last season and will be a force in the middle.”
The Lady Trojans have one other sophomore on their roster in transfer Priscila Sena. A 5’5” setter, Sena, transferred to the program from College of the Southwest where Armstrong was previously an assistant. Sena is originally from Sao Paulo, Brazil. Armstrong said she was happy that “Pri” decided to transfer to Colby.
“She has great hands and is a smart player, but needs to improve on her quickness and aggressiveness.”
The Colby squad features eight freshman: LeAnna Shaeffer (Oberlin, Kan.); Ashley Ming (Dighton, Kan.); Jessica Schmidt (Melvern, Kan.); Michele Ferreria (Sao Paulo, Brazil); Juliana Motta Da Silva (Campo Mourao, Brazil); Jessica Merino (Belen, New Mexico); Cassie Smatana (Albuquerque, New Mexico); and Lisa Faimon (Stratton, Neb.).
With the abundance of newcomers, Armstrong and assistant coach Juliana “Ju” Todescan are in the process of finding the right rotations for the team to be successful.

Trojan baseball splits series with Garden City
Monday, April 21
Despite splitting a four-game set with Garden City this weekend, the Colby Community College baseball team (24-22, 14-14) holds its own destiny on whether it will host a first-round series in the region tournament. CCC maintained its two-game edge over Garden City and Dodge City in the conference standings, with just one four-game conference series left. The Trojans play Hutchinson at home on April 26-27. Meanwhile, Garden City will play last place Cloud County and Dodge City will travel to Butler.
The Trojans are currently in fourth place at 14-14, behind Seward (22-6), Hutchinson (21-7) and Barton County (19-13). They are ahead of Garden City (12-16), Dodge City (12-16), Butler (11-17), Pratt (9-19) and Cloud County (8-20). The Trojans could lock up a home series if they win three-out-of-four against Hutch, which would be a tall task.

Game three
The Trojans lost game three 5-3. Chris Urbach allowed five runs in 2 2/3 innings and picked up the loss. Josh Edwards pitched well in relief, allowing just one hit in 3 2/3 innings of relief. Coach Comments: I am very pleased with the way we have played the last three days. We have struggled all season and we are starting to do the little things to help us win games. We are on a seven game winning streak. That should give us confidence on Tuesday and Wednesday in our conference and region games against Garden City and Butler. There were different players that stepped up all weekend and got the team going when we needed it. Our pitchers threw very well and we didn’t make mistakes on defense that cost us. We are currently 24-25. We have four doubleheaders left before the region tournament. We have three home dates this week. Games start at 3pm on Tuesday and Wednesday and 1pm on Friday.
The Lady Trojans travel to Cloud County on Sunday, April 27 for their final regular season action of the year. On Monday, April 29, the Lady Trojans will play a first-round playoff game for the conference and region tournament. Seedings are not yet finalized. Here are the recaps (provided by head coach Ryan Sturdy) for this weekend’s games

Baseball splits with Bulter on Saturday; rained out on Sunday
Sunday, March 30
The Colby Community College baseball team (16-12, 9-5) split Saturday with Butler County at the CCC baseball diamond. The Trojans lost the first game 6-5, but responded to win game two 3-1.
Runs were hard to come by in game one, as the conditions were not ideal. The wind was blowing in, making it impossible for the ball to carry. The Trojans scored a run in the bottom of the second and again in the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead. Butler tied the game in the fifth on a controversial play at the plate. Trojan catcher Eric Sim appeared to tag out a Butler baserunner, but the home plate umpire called him safe.
Butler used the momentum to add four runs in the sixth inning. The Trojans rallied in the seventh inning, despite two outs and no runners on. Consecutive hits by Brennan Peterson, Jaret Chatwood, Scott Hornstra and Aaron Dunsmore brought the Trojans to within one run. Dunsmore was on second and Steve Kletke drove the ball into the left-center gap, but it was caught.
Sean Lydon picked up the loss for the Trojans, despite allowing just one earned run in 5 innings. Five unearned runs were allowed on two Trojan errors.
The Trojans responded with a 3-1 victory in game two. Hornstra was 3-for-3 with an RBI and Trojan starting pitcher Mark Phillips allowed just one run in 6 innings of work. Phillips allowed four hits and four walks, but struck out seven. Damien Hess pitched the seventh inning for the save.

Coach Comments: We didn’t play with as much energy as we needed too. We make little mistakes on defense that hurt us. On offense we couldn’t get a hit with runners in scoring position. When we struggle at the plate we are letting it affect us on the defensive side. Hitting is contagious, when we are struggling as a team like we are now we need someone to step up and hit the ball to get us started. Our next action is today at Carl Adams Softball field against Barton County. Friday we take on Seward County. 3pm start time for both days.

Women's Golf Results from OPSU Invitational
Coach Lisa Stithem's comments
Abby Laverenz, Burlington, played very well. She tied for 9th out of a field of 3. Veronica Forsythe, Brush, CO, and Eryn Topliff, Goodland, also played well for their first tournament of the year. The girls were up against some very strong competition, competing against the 4 yr. schools. However, within the conference competition all three girls were very strong.

Coach Comments: We hit well and our pitchers threw very well. This should give us a boost going into the first region games on Thursday at Garden City. We had people get keys hits with runners in scoring position.
Overall I was very pleased with the way the team performed today. We are now tied for first in the conference. Our next two doubleheaders are against region opponents. Everyone up and down the lineup hit well today I just hope we carry it over the rest of the week.

Trojan men end season with loss to Seward
Monday, March 3
The Colby Community College men's basketball team ended their season with a 69-58 loss at home to Seward County. The Trojans finish the season 7-23 overall and 3-13 in the conference. Everson Lacerda finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds and finished the season with three consecutive double-doubles. Sophomore Andrew Engel, in his final game with the Trojans, finished with 13 points.
The Trojans were offically eliminated from the post-season tournament with Pratt's victory on Saturday, but still battled Seward to the end. The Trojans final record of 7-23 is very deceptive, considering they have battled through injuries and suspensions all season. They also lost two games in overtime and had players improve dramatically throughout the season.

Men's Basketball drops game against Barton
Wednesday, February 27
The CCC men's basketball team welcomed back point-guard Andrew Engel Wednesday night, but his services weren't enough to lift the Trojans to victory. Barton County handed the Trojans a 86-70 loss at the Community Building. Barton built a 21 halftime lead, shooting over 60 percent from the field in the first half. The Trojans narrowed the lead to 13 points several times in the second-half, but they couldn't creep any closer.
Both Everson Lacerda and Erick Peguero played tremendous for the Trojans. Lacerda had a season-high 26 points on 11-of-14 shooting from the floor, and also pulled down 11 rebounds. Pegeuro nearly had a triple-double, finishing with 21 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists.
Tashaun Kelly and Jordon Ottoway each added 10 points for the Trojans. Engel didn't score, attempted only 4 field goals and hobbled around on a less than 100 percent ankle, but his ball-handling enabled the Trojans to be more efficient offensively.

Baseball spilts four game set with Bossier Parish
by Cory Little
Littleton, Colo. sophomore
The Trojans baseball team kick-started their season this past weekend with a four game set against Bossier Parish Community College in Shreveport, Louisiana, going
2-2. The Cavaliers of Bossier Parish came into the game with an even five and five record and came out on Sunday and took the first two games.
The first game was a low-scoring affair with the Cavaliers topping the Trojans by a score of 3-1. Starter Sean Lydon gave a strong effort going 3 and 2/3 while only giving up 2 earned runs. Sophomore reliever Garret Morgan, who would prove to be a force out of the bullpen the entire weekend, came in and gave the Trojans a chance by holding Bossier Parish to zero runs the last 3 innings. The Trojans however could not quite get the sticks going against a very good Cavaliers pitching staff, as they were held to only five hits, with sophomore Kurri Darby getting Colby's only RBI.
Game 2 of the doubleheader was more of the same for the Trojans, as they were downed 4-3. BPCC pitcher Jordan LeGross turned in a dominating performance, striking out 12 Trojan batters through 7 innings. The Trojans got down 2 early but managed to scrape their way back to a 2-2 tie with two crucial sacrifice flies; one in the top of the 7th by sophomore transfer Dan Turre to get the Trojans on the board, and the another in the top of the 8th by Zach Semenza to knot the game up at 2. The Cavaliers battled back in the bottom of the ninth though and managed to scratch out a run out of two softly hit singles to win the game.
The Trojans were able to flip the script on the second day though, and went on to capture both games of the doubleheader. Colby got a great start out of freshman Josh Edwards, who went 5 innings while only giving up 2 earned runs. Edwards battled through adversity throughout the game, stranding at least one Cavalier runner on base each inning. Colby's big inning offensively came in the 6th, with Garret Stone leading off the inning with a big double to the gap. Freshman Scott Hornstra immediately drove him in with a single up the middle. The Trojans went on to win the first game by the score of 4-2.
The last game of the series proved to be the best of them all for Colby. It was a back and forth game up until the 8th inning when, with the score all knotted up at
4, the Cavaliers scored twice to go up 2 entering the top of the ninth.
Bossier Parish quickly got the first two outs but the Trojans showed tremendous heart and managed to scrape out two runs with two outs on a single by Steve Kletke. Reliever Garret Morgan proved to be huge once again for Colby, coming in and shutting down a good Bossier Parish lineup for four innings. His work gave the Trojans the chance to win the game in the 11th inning which they gladly took.
With one out Hornstra singled and Kletke singled him in with another clutch RBI. Sophmore Aaron Dunsmore, who had 4 hits in the game, cemented the lead with an RBI single to drive Kletke in. Morgan then closed the game out with a quick 3 up 3 down inning to pick up his first win of the year.
The Trojans are on the road again this coming weekend with a 2 game stand against Howard College of Big Spring, Texas and Odessa College of Odessa, Texas.

Qualifying was Akmal Adilov (4th) at 125 pounds. Adilov lost 3-1 to Tommy Edgmon from Pratt, but rebounded to pin Donte Bulter from Neosho. Adilov was injury defaulted in the match for third and fourth, but qualified as a wildcard.
"Akmal has a half-tear in his miniscus, and we wanted to rest him," Head Coach Steve Lampe said. "Hopefully it will be fully healed by nationals. Akmal has worked very hard over the last few weeks."
Danny Manius finished 3rd at 133 pounds. Manius defeated Luis Carranza of Northwest Wyoming by 7-4 dec., lost to Western Wyoming's Nick Mamalis by fall, defeated Kyle Beebe of Pratt 9-1 and won by fall over Rory Kendall of Neosho.
Lyubomir Kumbarov finished 2nd at 141 pounds. Kumbarov defeated Jeremy Lawled of Neosho 2-1, but lost 4-2 to Derek Ward of Labette.
"Lyubo wrestled very well," Lampe said. "He was called for stalling in the match against Ward, which we felt was questionable."
T.J. Hepburn continued his impressive streak over the past few tournaments, finishing first at 149 pounds. Hepburn won by techicall fall over Eric Cress of Pratt and pinned Ty Jaquess of Neosho.
Cole Garcia finished 2nd at 157 pounds. Garica pinned Thad Zempel of Western Wyoming, but lost in the finals to Joe Cornejo of Labette by a 3-2 decision.
"Cole ran into a little bit of trouble in the finals match," Lampe said. "He struggled with bottom control, but he'll be alright. It was the first time wrestling against the Labette wrestler, but he will be fine for nationals."
Delanno Palmore qualified 2nd at 165 pounds. Palmore won by an 8-5 decision over Kenny Carney of Neosho, but lost to ranked wrestler Mickey Morgan of Labette by 8-4 decision.
Scott Miller qualified 3rd at 174 pounds. Miller was probably the story of the day for the Trojans, wrestling for the first time this season. He lost the opening match by fall to Joe Yust of Labette, but rebounded to win by fall over J. Thomas of Pratt and win 4-3 over Corey Green of Northwest Wyoming.
"(Scott) was way to exicted in his first match," Lampe said. "He started quickly, but ran out of gas and ended up being disqualified because he couldn't finish the match. After that, he settled down and wrestled better and smarter as the day went on."
The final qualifier was no surprise as Chris Kearn finished 1st at 184 pounds. Coach Lampe said Kearn started slow, but finished strong. Kearn defeated Kirk Fairley of Pratt 8-6 and defeated Anthonyt Enyobi 7-2 in the finals.
The National Tournament will be held on Friday, Feb. 22 and Saturday, Feb. 23 in Rochester, Minnesota. The website for the national tournament is http://www.rochsports.org/2008njcaawrestling.php

Coach Comments: We didn't play bad considering we have been outside only a few days. We had one inning in each game that cost us. Our hitting was up and down but our defense play well. Our pitchers need to improve before our next game in three weeks. We need to attack pitches that we can drive with runners in scoring position. This gives us something to gauge ourselves on. Now we know exactly what we need to work on. Our next game is at McCook, NE February 29 2pm start time.

Men's Basketball loses 76-51 to Cloud (Jan. 16)
The Colby Community College men's basketball team (5-13, 2-3) lost 76-51 Wednesday, Jan. 16 to visiting Cloud County. Freshman Mike Boyd returned to the line-up and led the Trojans with 21 points, but Cloud capatilized on the absence of Koance Davis and a poor showing by the Trojan squad.

Sunday, Jan. 13
Colby men fall to Butler County
After falling behind 24-2 to start the game on Sunday, the Colby Community College men's basketball team (5-12, 2-2) slowly clawed its way back into the game. Even without their top two leading scorers, Koance Davis and Mike Boyd, the Trojans cut the deficit down to nine at halftime.
After another slow start to the second half, the Trojans cut the lead down to four points with seven minutes remaining. However, they were not able to get over the hump and lost 83-72.
Andrew Engel led the Trojans with 24 points on 10-of-21 shooting from the field. Jordon Ottoway finished with 20 points and hit four three-pointers. The Trojans once again got solid contributions from Tashaun Kelly, who had 7 points and 10 assists. Freshman Anthony Rohr came off the bench to lead the Trojans with 11 rebounds. Erick Pegeuro added 12 points and 5 rebounds.
The men's team learned that Mike Boyd will miss the Trojan's next game and Koance Davis will miss Wednesday's game and next Sunday's game for their roles in an altercation last Wednesday at Dodge City.
